I miss daily walks along the beach in Birch Bay. There are small lakes I can drive to from my residence here in Spokane, and there's the Spokane River, but I'm spoiled. I have to get into my truck, drive through the city, get on the freeway, and drive some more. Yeah, big whoopee!
But I did all of that and Suki and I ended up walking along the Spokane River east out by Liberty Lake and Otis Orchard.
The other side of the river was obviously a popular entrance point to the river, as kids and families carried their inner tubes and inflatible boats down to the water's edge and with much laughing and shouting, hopped in and headed quickly downstream.
This river seemed very clean. I could see the river bottom and one or two little fishies swimming around the rocks. When I visited with my son, Owen, in Grand Junction, I found the Colorado River to be very muddy and murky. It wasn't pretty at all.
I was curious what kind of rocks I would find in a river compared to the cobble and pebbles I would find at Birch Bay.
So, I had fun looking at rocks and listening to the flow of the river. And Suki again proved herself to be THE best photographer's dog in the world. She just curled up on the riverbank and let me putter around to my heart's content.

Quits ...
I've been checking contents of boxes, rejecting contents, emptying boxes, emptying files, drawers, cleaning off my desk, cleaning out my studio, throwing away trash, throwing away a way of life. So anxious to be gone. So tired.

More of the beach in Birch Bay ...
Another day of organizing and wrapping up everything. Amazing how the time is quickly--QUICKLY!!!!!--passing. Less than a week and I'll be truckin' off to CO, literally.
Anyway, here are some more beach photographs. In the latter two photos it was fun to capture how the tides sculpted the seaweed and the sand and pebbles.

Beach Farewells ...
Since my time by the bay is quickly drawing to a close, I think I'll try to do my last week of photographs of Birch Bay.
Today's photograph is one of the many picnic tables that dot the shore and park. Wasn't it nice of someone who pushed them all together to make this wonderful image? My thanks to them. With the coming Memorial Day weekend, I can well image the laughing, eating, drinking folks who will occupy these tables. What fun!

And Now, Today's Photographic Upload
I took this shot of sun-kissed pink tulips this morning. It was in a modest garden, but I was reminded of the annual display of literally thousands of daffodils, hyacinths, and tulips up along mountain path garden in Running Springs, CA. I think Dale Bauer no longer opens their mountainside garden to the public, but I was fortunate to see it on a number of occasions. Hmmm, where do I have those photographs? I seem to remember that they planted about a million bulbs over a span of 50 years. A terrible forest fire almost completely destroyed that area and they lost their cabin home, but a lot of the bulbs came up again in the spring. Awesome!
The sun is shining. People are walking and cycling around the Bay. It's a beautiful Day 83!

Wet and Cold 72
What a wretched day! But, here's a photograph with pilings, a rock, and water that all seem to complement one with the others. It's all very simplified, but the strong horizontal of the sandbar at the top, the immobility of the rock and pebbles and the pilings against the movement of the water are attractive to my eye.

Foliage and 365 ...
I almost shut down my computer and headed home, but remembered NO ACCESS AT HOME, so I'll quickly share with you today's Project 365 offerings.
It was messy out this morning, but sunshine poked through in the late afternoon. When the sun comes out I notice all sorts of little plants and things, all co-existing and thriving here in the Pacific Northwest.
Today's photos are a sample of foliage from pine cones and fern, to delicate little spring flowers I don't know the name of, to bamboo!

A Sunny Day 62 of 365
Thank goodness for sunshine! I remember my ex-boss, upon telling him 7 years ago that I was moving to Washington, replying, "When moss starts growing between your toes, you can always come back here to Redlands!" With all of the rain and cold we've had lately, it feels like I COULD actually grow moss between my toes! Jack knew what he was talking about! No, not returning to Redlands.
But, here are today's photographs. This is the scenery along the road where I now live. Beautiful, isn't it. The last photograph is of trees that caught my eye. I couldn't figure out if there were orange blossoms on the tree, or what. But on closer examination, it is peeling bark that is catching the late afternoon sun. It looks like the trees are a-flame!

Spring is in the details and 365
Even though the crocus are blooming, and there is a hint of yellow showing in the tight daffodil buds, the big picture is still one of drab branches bare of leaves, and fields of brown and gold. But even in the dregs of winter, there's a peace and tranquility before the world bursts forth again in a fury of growth.
Today's photograph is one of looking past some poplars into a field. I liked the perspective and the different color shapes.

Another day, another photograph ...
I took a couple of photographs in to Frameworks in Bellingham for a rush mat and frame. The client is paying for rush service because she's moving Sunday. While leaving the establishment, I thanked them again for being able to get to it so quickly. The owner said so many of their jobs are rushed, as though "we" all wait until the absolute last moment to get things framed, so that it becomes a rush. I said, "No. This one really is a rush, because I just found out about the need yesterday." He made no comment, but gave me that look. You know which one I mean. I had to laugh!
One iPhone photograph is of something man-made. The other is of something natural, but I think it was man-made, too.

Project 365 and whatchamacallit ...
I went to the office and back home today. But there is about a half mile betwixt the two places, so heck yes, I took some photographs!
Some beach debris, driftwood some more, and a concrete bulwark that over the years was no match for the constant ebb and flow and weather of Birch Bay.

Project 365
I just had to get out on the beach today. I always think more clearly when I'm out walking, and walking along the beach is even better. A lot to think about. But I wasn't so lost in thought that I missed this tumble of sand dollars. They weren't in an area of the bay where I've seen them before, usually farther out from shore or in a muddy area of the northern area of the bay. I have a hunch someone gathered them up and then for whatever reason left them. But, their loss was my gain, and now yours.
A sand dollar for your thoughts?

Etsy Site Update
This morning I checked my Etsy shop http://www.kweststudio8.etsy.com/ and found my photograph "Thorns on the Beach" was included in an Etsy Treasury yesterday. Unlikely candidate for a treasury, methought, but it just goes to show there are other "thorny" sorts out there! Love and Thorns is the name of the Treasury.

I've been pleased with how many times my photographs have been included in these ongoing and ever changing Treasuries.
However, while on the site, I checked how many times each of my photographs had been viewed and it amazed me that a photograph I had snapped of a tree limb chair in front of A Lot of Flowers in Fairhaven, WA has been viewed about 8 TIMES more frequently than most of the other photographs I've presented. By far it has been viewed more often. I'm certain it is the title I gave the photograph that prompted the views: Hobbit Chair. Just goes to show how important a title might be, eh?

Project 365
Another rainy day in Birch Bay. But I always find something in the street to pique my interest, although this photograph isn't in the street, but at the entrance of a parking lot. I like diagonals:

I can't help myself. I looked down. My intent for this project is to look UP,
but downward observations are a hard habit to overcome.
I was waiting for someone and looked down.
I thought it humorous to see the dark grid of the public bench,
the stone tile ... and my feet.
I'm easily amused.

Project 365 ...

Cold and rainy. The storms toss a lot of debris onto the beach. Lots of broken shells and seaweed. This pile of seaweed, oyster shell, cobble, broken clam shell caught my eye. Even on a dismal gray day, the pinks in the oyster, greens of the broken clam shell and burgundy in the seaweed stood out:

I've been playing with the B&W feature on my Canon PowerShot SD790 IS. While out picking up some dogfood, my eye was attracted to this grove of trees. Why not?

I was photographing a newly made pair of earrings at the kitchen counter, and loved the colors of the copper pitcher and the red box, even the shadows and the warm and cool contrasting walls. This was shot with my iPhone.

In the moment ...
Due to weather conditions beyond my control this morning, I’m at home drinking coffee, and reading “Poemcrazy” by Susan Goldsmith Wooldridge. The slim book had been gathering dust on my bookcase for over a year, but something prompted me to pick it up and just flip through the collection of writing strategies and meditations.
It has been way, way too long since I’ve written any poetry. The last of the good ones were written before Mom died. It can’t be mere coincidence that death took my poetry along with my mother.
But that’s not of what I write today. The author wrote the following in her essay about how the body reacts:
“I sometimes think poems come from electricity in the air, a hum inside, impulses we can feel in our body. When I sense an electrical charge around a person, event or place, I know there’s a poem in it, waiting for words. Poems are often about something so important to us we can feel the need to write as a physical urge.”
Although she was writing about poem writing urges, I recognized those same feelings or bodily reactions when I come across an image that I have to photograph.
I often am out and about running errands, driving from point A to point B—although I often am seduced by interesting side streets to turn aside from my goal of reaching point B as quickly as I had planned—and out of the corner of my eye I’ll see something that takes my breath away, causes my pulse rate to quicken, elevates my body temperature, my pupils dilate. I am almost giddy with excitement! In those instances, I am compelled to stop, or turn around and go back, regardless of the urgency of the errand or responsibility, and take a photograph. There are times when I’ve ignored my bodily reaction and gone on to my appointment or whatever. I always regret not heeding those prompts, because when I later return, the light was always different, the weather had changed, my creative perspective was altered, and whatever spark there was in that image in that precise time was forfeited.
As a parting shot across the bow of this little musing, my feelings in those moments don’t guarantee a dynamite photograph that everyone will go loony over. I’ve taken lots of shots that once I got home and calmly previewed on my computer, weren’t as incredible as I had presumed in the moment.
Nonetheless, as a huge component of my enjoyment of visual imagery, I will continue to rejoice in and act upon my body and soul reacting to creative impulse.

First comes identification of target market ...
Danielle, Etsy Seller Education Coordinator, has been publishing a weekly “Holiday Boot Camp” to help online vendors gear up for the holiday season of sales. There are thousands of us vendors on the Etsy site, so trying to stand out from the crowd is an ongoing challenge. I'm finding her articles very helpful.
However, one point in particular made by Danielle that keeps tumbling around in my head is to identify one's market. Once you identify your target buyer, you can then cut to the chase and market your product more successfully to them. Now, that seems a no-brainer, right?
In previous sales in actual brick and mortar stores and galleries, I’ve had the most success with my Bondo Series and the Street Art Series. But when I cobbled together my online shop, those seemed too restrictive.
I have to admit that I do not know to whom I’m marketing my photographs. They don’t fit a niche. I offer a mish-mash of photographs.
I’ve noticed that some photographers’ photos have a dreamy or romantic quality. Some are strictly of nudes or figurative studies. Some are wholly architectural in subject matter. Other photo vendors sell floral photographs. Still others offer photographs of clouds, or birds, or balloons, or baboons.
So, do I narrow my subject matter or style down to appeal to a specific market?
Am I offering too many different photographs? Should I develop a KWest Studio 8 “brand” of photography and adhere only to my brand?
So, who ARE my target buyers?
I think I’ll pour a glass of Vognier and ponder this weighty topic. It may take two glasses.
