Project 365 and Spring (Cont.)

The blossoms are probably the most evident signs of spring right now, but looking a little closer at those seemingly dead branches and dried seed pods that weathered through the autumn and winter, promise of green leaves to come ... even among the thorns. Ma Nature at work.

Aesthetically, I liked the round shapes in red and brown, and the angles of the branches forming triangles, squares, defining shapes ... and yes, the thorns.

A Daffy 365 ...

Out running errands late in the afternoon. The golden light at that time of the day is glorious. I went a little daffy! The second photo has a watercolor effect.

Whoops!

There are only 365 days in a year ... NOT 375 days!

So there!

I'm going to throw in another photograph, just 'cause ...  There's something about the rope that seems alive and coiling, not that I'm trying to advertise any product.

One "Oops" and Project 375

I received an invitation from a team leader on the Etsy site to join their team of vendors because she liked my photography and thought it would be a good match for their group. However, I had to decline at present because it would mean a commitment of time, which I don't have right now. It is an open invitation, so when my schedule solidifies somewhat I'll be able to follow-up. How nice to be invited!

I received notice this morning that my photograph Arc on White was featured in another treasury. I'm pleased at the exposure ... now if I would just sell one, or more, of those lovely photographs.

Today's and yesterday's Project 365 photographs are a continuation of a long line of Street Art obsessions. I took one photograph yesterday, got sidetracked and didn't upload it. As fate would have it, while at the market today, I couldn't help but notice the curb had been repainted ... Yahoo!!! I particularly favor the pink one.

So here are the two:

Sun, Warm Temperatures, Ka-POW!

Everything that can bloom seems to be a-blooming like c-r-a-z-y! Watch out, folks! I love it! So, of course I'm going to share some ka-pow with you today!

I came across this shrub blooming, pretty enough. But when I got closer, I fell in love with all the wayward branches and the POLKA DOTS! You'll see.

Project 365 is just beachy today ...

It was sunny and in low 50s today ... glorious! I was almost tempted to put down the top on the Miata. However, I did get out on the beach, as did many others. There were beachwalkers, dogs, motorcyclists, everyone out reveling in the spring sunshine!

Day 81 and original paintings added

What a beautiful day it was outside! I didn't get to enjoy it too much because of all this stupid packing. I hate moving! But it has to be done.

Anyway, I did take a break and went to photograph the plum blossoms that are starting to burst open. The street leading to the community where I am living (just for another 8 days) is lined on either side with plum trees. They are stunning in full blossom. But once I got the images home and started playing with them--on my break--the chain link fence in the background was too strong. So, I've used a watercolor effect filter and I like them. I thought perhaps I would do a grouping of 4 images to a set of blank cards. What do you think?

While on that extended break, I uploaded two acrylic paintings to http://www.kweststudio8.etsy.com/ and am looking forward to seeing what response I get. Will the paintings be used in as many Etsy treasuries as are the photographs? Time will tell.

In any case, here are the plum blossoms.

Day 80 of 365

It was raining this morning, but the sun is trying to shine through at almost 5:00 p.m. I love that it is staying light longer! It makes for a huge psychological boost, and I need all the psychological boosts I can get. As I drove to the office I noticed that the plums lining the road are in bloom. I'll stop tomorrow and take some shots before they all burst open. I really do love the new growth of spring!

The subject of today's photograph has nothing to do with daylight or dark, nor does it have anything to do with the season. It's just an onion, an onion that has been cut into, at that. I enjoyed the straight angles of the dish on the diagonal, versus the roundness of the onion, the curved lines in the onion, and its frayed top. The image is a little dark, but I favor that, as well.

This is a sweet-tasting onion. I look forward to chopping it up some more and adding it to whatever I decide to cook for dinner tonight. Hmmm, what am I going to cook for dinner tonight? Something with chopped onions, to be sure!

Sometimes the simple things are the most enjoyable.

First Day of Spring ... Huzzah! Oh, and 365.

Am I one day behind? I thought for certain I had uploaded a photograph for March 19. No? Well, I'll provide two today. I've been busily "trying" to put things in order for my move, but it surely seems like I'm merely shoving things around into different positions and not getting anything OUT OF THE HOUSE!

I tried to take a couple of photographs of the Super Moon last night, but I was not up to the task and neither was my camera. C'est la vie. At least the clouds cleared and I saw it; awesome.

Okay, I got that off my chest and I can move on.  The two photographs below were of trinkets I had pinned on my bulletin board as reminders, as treasures du jour, as things I didn't want to misplace.

While I'm on, might as well ... Project 365

Back again! Well, I didn't leave. Since I'm here, I might as well save time and upload my photo(s) du jour.

Etsy Treasury and 365

Happy Birthday, Cole! Grandma kisses and hugs to you!!!

I received notification that another one of my photographs was included in an Etsy treasury titled Rich,Warm and Beautiful. The photo was one I shot while in Hawaii a couple of years ago. Oh how I wish I were back there again ... warm ... lush ... tropical breezes ... gorgeous colors ... no money, honey.

The reception for Northwest  Sea and Sky is tomorrow night from 6 - 9 p.m. at Loomis Hall Gallery on Martin Street in Blaine. There are ten photographers and six sculptors represented in this exhibit. It's been years since I have submitted any of my artwork for inclusion in a show. It will be fun to see my two photos hung on a gallery wall! I might even work up the nerve to submit more elsewhere. But, don't want to get carried away, you know.

Since living in Birch Bay, I've often passed by a little old building on the northwest corner of Blaine and Peace Portal. Right now it's a thrift shop, before then a used book store, an antique store, and before that it had been empty for years. There's a sizable Dutch presence in Whatcom County, although more so over in the Lynden area about 15 miles east. Only once have I seen this windmill moving, and I never realized there was wording on the blades of the windmill. Good thing it's painted over, because the shop is seldom OPEN.

Spring is in the details and 365

Even though the crocus are blooming, and there is a hint of yellow showing in the tight daffodil buds, the big picture is still one of drab branches bare of leaves, and fields of brown and gold. But even in the dregs of winter, there's a peace and tranquility before the world bursts forth again in a fury of growth.

Today's photograph is one of looking past some poplars into a field. I liked the perspective and the different color shapes.

All is Right and Another 365

It's spring! Well, it will be Sunday, officially. But crocus don't know from officially. They just pop up out of the cold soil when it's right. And this is all right with me!

Belair is 365

This afternoon I was showing some property to clients and I took a back road in order to avoid a traffic congestion, and I flew by an old Belair out in a field. There wasn't time to lollygag and take photos then, but once I was done with the clients and they were on their merry way, I made my merry way back to the derelict ol' Belair.

I took a number of shots, but because of the hour I'll just plunk out two or three for your viewing delight.

My photograph "Parlour Plush" was featured in the following Etsy Treasury:
http://www.etsy.com/treasury/4d7ec4338ca

Sailboat at sunset was also included in another Etsy Treasury, but I can't now find the link to that one.

And now, the Belair ...

Still dreary and 365

Everyone I talk with repeats the same refrain, "I am done with winter. I want spring NOW!" Our time sprang forward, now we're all ready for Spring!

Today I borrowed a truck from another agent at work to schlepp some bigger pieces of furniture back to my storage unit. Of course, size is a relative term when one owns a little ol' Miata. Just about ANY piece of furniture is too big to carry in my car. Anyway, while picking up the truck I spied this scene at low tide on Drayton Harbor. Hence, today's photo.

03-13-2011

Oh, great! Just heard tomorrow's weather forecast, 53-degrees, more rain and chance of strong wind gusts. I'm very grateful that the rain and wind held off while I was moving my furniture today! Whew!

Red and Dead and 365

Red, Red and White

There's a derelict burger joint on Peace Portal in Blaine that has been on the market for as long as the seven years I've lived here. I pass by it just about every day and think about what uses I could put the empty building to. But today I stopped, in the rain, and scouted around a bit.

I found a lot of peeling paint, which appeals to me--pun intended--and evidence of rain present and past. So today's photo is a mini-album. Surprise!

Another yellow and 365 ...

Here's that other yellow photograph I wanted to include last night ... well, very, very early this morning:

03-11-2011 (Happy Birthday, Ron!)

Have one photograph of a grove of trees by the BP refinery. The trunks are so uniform and in rows ... intriguing. The other photo for today is of the humble remnants of a weed and a graceful juxtaposition of stems. Simple photos today; restful.

Just a little wind and rain here, thank God!

My heart goes out to those folks swept up in the 8.9 earthquake in Japan and the resulting tsunami. It was a miserable weather day here in Birch Bay, but I can handle rain and wind.

Maybe because of the dour weather today my eye was drawn to YELLOW! However, some of the yellow was rather menacing. I had another yellow photo today, but I can't figure out the intricacies of this blog template, so I couldn't go back and retrieve another photo file, once I had already selected the three below. Oh well. This will have to do for today, I mean yesterday.

Another day, another photograph ...

I took a couple of photographs in to Frameworks in Bellingham for a rush mat and frame. The client is paying for rush service because she's moving Sunday. While leaving the establishment, I thanked them again for being able to get to it so quickly. The owner said so many of their jobs are rushed, as though "we" all wait until the absolute last moment to get things framed, so that it becomes a rush. I said, "No. This one really is a rush, because I just found out about the need yesterday." He made no comment, but gave me that look. You know which one I mean. I had to laugh!

One iPhone photograph is of something man-made. The other is of something natural, but I think it was man-made, too.

Something Submitted and Project 365 ...

I turned in the Artist Statement:

Kay West

Artist with a Camera

Over a lifetime I've lived and visited many different places inside and out of the United States. Each place has provided delightful places, things and people to learn about and love.

Currently, I'm living and creating in as close to the most northwesterly corner of the Continental United States as one can get. I live a delightfully laid back existence within shouting distance of a small, peaceful bay. Well, it's peaceful most of the time. But when one lives on the water, one  must expect exceptions to the rule.
I'm a visually-oriented gal who usually has a camera at hand and there isn't much I take more pleasure in than capturing a moment in time. There's something about isolating a scene or person or object that will have changed in some way the instant after I snap the photograph, that makes my spine tingle.

I don't have sophisticated, cutting edge digital equipment. And I don't pretend to have and use other than rudimentary understanding of aperture and f-stops. I seldom use flash. Sometimes I will play around with editing an image, but if I do, I state it.

I just enjoy the rush I experience when I am lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time and I have my camera to take away that "moment" to share with others.

XXX

As for today's photo(s) I left my camera charging at home and only had my iPhone. Here's what I came up with from prowling around Blaine this afternoon.
